Evidence of God in the Mundane
1.19.2011 // Jason Johnson
The glory of God is His infinite worth put on display. God has the capacity to redeem and use all things for His glory, for the purpose of His infinite worth being put on display in this world. In the big or small things and in the significant or seemingly mundane and monotonous, the glory of God is such that in all things it can be uniquely demonstrated and declared above all. Francis Schaeffer, in his book True Spirituality, writes about the victory won through the finished work of Jesus on the Cross. This victory is clearly evidenced in His death and resurrection, and “When Christ returns,” Schaeffer writes, “the evidence of His victory will be completely obvious.” Schaeffer continues, “But God did not mean that there should be no evidence of the reality of the victory of the Cross between Jesus’ ascension and His second coming. God has always intended that Christians should be the evidence, the demonstration, of Christ’s victory on the Cross.” In other words, we are the unique means by which God has chosen to evidence and demonstrate His glory to this world. We are saved, and temporarily left on this earth between the Cross and eternity, to put His infinite worth on display…in all things, through all things. The Bible says that in “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). We’re to submit all things to the greater and higher purpose of putting His glory, His infinite worth, on display for all to see. This comprehensive call on our lives is not a situational suggestion to glorify God when the circumstances allow. Rather, it’s an all encompassing promise on our lives that in Jesus our lives, in all ways, big and small, can be used to magnify the infinite worth of God. Jesus substantiates all things, big or small. He maximizes even the mundane of life and gives purpose and meaning to them to make them great. Nothing can be so small that Christ cannot take it and use it for ultimate purpose of demonstrating and declaring the bigness of the glory of God – for the purpose of evidencing Him to this world between the Cross and eternity. The promise for moms is that even in the seemingly mundane and often overwhelming tasks of changing diapers, feeding and nap schedules, moments of peace punctuated by tantrums and meltdowns, Jesus substantiates, gives meaning and purpose, and redeems ALL things for God’s glory. In ALL things He can be magnified, and in ALL things He can and will use you to evidence Him to a lost world. The promise for school teachers, doctors, businessmen, receptionists, sanitation workers, mechanics, waitresses, and so on is that Jesus substantiates, gives meaning and purpose, and redeems ALL things for God’s glory. In ALL things He can be magnified, and in ALL things He can and will use you to evidence Him to a lost world. God takes the normal, every day, run of the mill, menial, monotonous and sometimes mundane things of life and uses them ALL for the greater and higher purpose of putting His infinite worth on display.
