Jesus Died For Us
4.11.2011 // Jason Johnson

The Gospel tells us we did not earn or deserve the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.

The Gospel also tells us there is nothing we could ever do to outdo what Jesus has done for us.

The good news of the Gospel allows us to rest knowing we have been fully loved and fully accepted by God through Jesus. Not because we earned it and not because we somehow worked to deserve it. This is why we celebrate His death; this is why His scandalous, grotesque murder is actually good news for us - it accomplishes everything necessary for us to be reconciled back to God – it achieves everything we so desperately needed but are so deficient in being able to accomplish for ourselves.

As we prepare to celebrate the “good news” of Jesus’ death, here are some verses to read through, pray through, memorize and meditate on this week:

  • Isaiah 53:5 – He was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.
  • Isaiah 53:12 – He poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
  • Romans 4:25 - He was delivered up for our trespasses.
  • Romans 5:8 – God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • 1 Peter 3:18 – Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.
  • 1 John 2:2 – He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
  • Galatians 3:13 – Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.
