“Christ Alone”: Part 4, Sola Series
5.18.2011 // Sean Eppers
The Reformation called the church back to faith in Christ as the sole mediator between God and man. While the early Roman church taught there is a purgatory where the souls of the dead are detained and helped by the intercessions of the faithful (saints), the reformers taught that salvation was by Christ’s work alone “Sola Christus”. Scripture says this about Christ: He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. Colossians 1:13-18
Many of us have tasted and seen the greatness of Jesus first hand, we’ve received the gift of faith from Jesus, Jesus has been merciful to us when we did not deserve it, and daily we know it is His grace that sustains our every breath. Yet still we often forget all about Jesus. God knows our hearts and our tendency to so easily forget greatness, even when we are staring it in the face. Remember the first time you heard you favorite band play a concert, remember the painting that so moved you, you had to have it hanging in your home, the first time you saw an athlete preform something seemingly impossible, you’ll never forget those moments of greatness. However over time that band becomes just another CD in your car, the painting is something you walk past everyday and never give a second thought, and your favorite superstar athlete is just another guy on your fantasy roster. We so easily forget greatness. The writer of Hebrews warns us as believers to pay closer attention to what we have heard so that we don’t drift away from it (Hebrews 2:1). God knows our tendency to forget about Jesus, so he gives us warnings to wake us up from complacency and move us to eternity. Christ is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Hebrews 1:3-4 The name of Jesus is above every name, because Jesus alone has accomplished everything, and has given us everything necessary for our great salvation. Remember Jesus in everything, pay close attention, stop drifting and start running toward Him! Join us this Sunday, May 22nd as we celebrate “Sola Christus” – Christ Alone!
