Teaching Children about the Haitian Crisis
1.25.2010 // Jessica Richey

Most likely your children have seen images and heard about the crisis in Haiti. How do you explain what happened to young children?

Be honest. Don’t sugarcoat what is going on in Haiti. Explain to your children what is happening so that they may pray for the people effected and their specific needs.

Speak to them on their level. Some children may not know what challenges the country of Haiti had before the earthquake, the earthquake itself, and its aftermath. This is a great opportunity to share how different some people in other parts of the world live in comparison to where we live.

Do something. Pray with your child. Come up with ways that you can get involved in helping the people of Haiti. Select an organization and help your child raise money to assist in the efforts in Haiti.

Click here to see Compassion International’s Blog that has wonderful information on the earthquake and updates on what is going on in Haiti. There are pictures that you may show your children as well.

Most importantly we want our children to know that God is in control. It is our responsibility to help those in need and we must discern what the means in our families.
